Pink eyed varieties of rat are usually not very popular with pet owners or even to a large extent with breeders, but when the platinum rat became available in the UK, all of a sudden we had a pink eyed rat that everyone wanted. They are a really pretty and quite unusual looking variety.

This variety can only be created with the American mink gene, not the UK mink gene. Blue rats with the UK mink gene are lavender rather than platinum.

Genetics: American mink, blue, and a modifier gene to pale the colour and eyes further (aaamamdd). The blue needs to be from pale (powder/American) lines rather than the darker British blue to get the right shade.

NFRS standard: To be an even and bright shade of pale grey with a distinct ice-blue hue, with no suggestion of creamy, brownish or strong blue tones. Belly colour to match top. Feet pale grey. Eye colour red to ruby.
